Western Australia's Biggest Wind Farm Expansion: Unveiling the First Turbines (2026)

In a significant milestone for renewable energy, the initial four out of a planned thirty new turbines have been successfully installed at the Warradarge wind farm located in Western Australia. This development comes just a year after the ambitious $400 million expansion project was first announced.

Once all 30 turbines are fully operational, the wind farm's capacity will increase dramatically from 180 megawatts (MW) to an impressive total of 283 MW across 71 turbines, making it the largest wind facility in the state.

All of the new Vestas turbines are expected to be completed by August and will match the specifications of those in the initial phase of the project, featuring a hub height of 84 meters and a rotor diameter of 136 meters.

The project is spearheaded by Bright Energy Investments, a partnership formed between Potentia Energy and the state-owned Synergy.

"We are excited to witness the construction progress and are eager to maintain our collaboration with our esteemed partners as we advance toward a sustainable energy future for the state," stated Werther Esposito, CEO of Potentia Energy, in a recent LinkedIn post.

The expansion has received financial backing of $30 million from the state government. Energy Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson highlighted that this initiative showcases the government's commitment to fortifying the energy grid while facilitating large-scale renewable energy integration.

"Navigating the energy transition is undoubtedly complex, but Western Australia possesses the essential resources and a credible plan to establish itself as a leader in renewable energy, securing a sustainable future for generations ahead," she remarked on LinkedIn.

Once operational, the enhanced capacity of the Warradarge wind farm will surpass that of Windlab’s Collgar wind farm, which currently stands at 222 MW, and Alinta’s Yandin wind farm, with its capacity of 214 MW.

However, it's worth noting that there are ten additional wind projects in Western Australia currently in the planning stages, some of which promise even greater capacity. These include the 489 MW Parron wind project, which has already received planning approval, as well as the ambitious gigawatt-scale Western Green Energy Hub and the Australian Renewable Energy Hub, both of which are still under review.
