The police claimed the word 'intifada' was unlawful, leading to Tatchell's detention at Sutton police station in south London. This incident is part of a broader trend of increasing restrictions and criminalization of peaceful protests, according to Tatchell. He emphasizes that 'intifada' is an Arabic term for uprising, rebellion, or resistance against Israel's occupation, not violence or antisemitism. Tatchell's arrest follows a similar incident in December when the Metropolitan Police stated that chanting 'globalise the intifada' would result in arrest due to the 'changed context' after the Bondi Beach terror attack in Sydney. In a recent London rally, three individuals were charged with expressing support for an intifada against Israel's war crimes and genocide. Tatchell, who has a history of defending Jewish people against antisemitism, joined the March Against Antisemitism alongside the chief rabbi and thousands of Jewish people in November 2023. He is currently taking legal action against the Met Police for a previous arrest related to a placard criticizing Israel's actions, which he believes was unjustified.
