London's Victorian terrace house gets a cozy yet sturdy makeover! TYPE, a local architecture studio, has transformed this historic home with a focus on sensory experiences and natural materials. But here's where it gets interesting: they've used pale brick, clay tiles, and ash carpentry to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, while also ensuring the design is 'robust and timeless'.
The family living here can now enjoy a larger kitchen and dining area on the ground floor, thanks to a clever extension. Imagine cooking in a bright, spacious kitchen with a long timber-framed skylight, and then opening a full-height pivot glass door to dine in the garden! The interior design is a masterpiece of tactility, with a built-in bench and kitchen carpentry in matching ash wood.
And this is the part most people miss: the exterior isn't just about aesthetics. Two different tones of hand-moulded masonry were carefully chosen, adding a subtle yet captivating detail. The lower section is finished in white brickwork, while the upper part boasts a pale cream color, creating a visually appealing contrast.
The attic has been transformed into a cozy retreat, with ash panelling and built-in storage, and cork flooring for a quiet, comfortable atmosphere. Even with limited space, the architects managed to bring the sky and city views inside through a series of skylights and windows.
TYPE's approach is truly unique, as they emphasize the importance of touch, acoustics, light, and even smell in their designs. By relating the material selection to the existing 19th-century construction, they've created a harmonious blend of old and new.
