A shopper's unexpected find at a Kmart store in Melbourne has sparked curiosity and laughter among social media users. While exploring the candle aisle at the Chadstone location, Josh stumbled upon something quite peculiar that completely redefined what it means to leave feedback.
In a TikTok video posted on his account, @joshuacornelius04, he humorously showcased this quirky discovery, stating, "One of the funniest things I’ve ever seen."
As he browsed, he noticed yellow Post-It Notes affixed to various candles, each containing unique snippets of commentary about the products. The first note, which he found attached to a melon-scented candle, was a scathing critique that read, "too artificial. Not worth $2."
But that wasn't the only note he uncovered. Further down the shelf, he spotted another candle named 'happiness,' which had a decidedly more dismal review: "not very happy," it said, accompanied by a sad face and a single star rating.
Lastly, there was a note attached to a Darrell Lea licorice allsorts-inspired candle which conveyed a similar dissatisfaction: "It smells like licorice, but it’s low-key gross," earning a two-star rating from the anonymous reviewer.
While these notes do not necessarily represent the full range of customer experiences—one online review praised the ‘happiness’ scented candle as "an extremely affordable and beautifully smelling candle that fills my home with ambience and love"—the impromptu rating system brought plenty of amusement to users on social media.
One person humorously remarked, "Like ‘staff picks’ at the bookstore, except for candles," while another stated, "Real life reviews, I like it." A third user quipped, "The question is who carries a pen and paper these days?"
Many others praised this innovative approach, suggesting that it could enhance the shopping experience. "I really appreciate that for real cause sometimes Kmart candles are hit or miss," one user commented. Another reflected on their own experiences, saying, "This is so good because the amount of times I say ‘oh, look how pretty’ and it will suck me in with something wild like Vanilla Cookie Crumble Doughnut Fudge cake pop, and then it smells like straight up gas and foot odour."
Expressing support, a third user cheerfully added, "We love a helpful queen!"
Although Kmart opted not to provide an official comment, sources indicate that the retailer values all forms of customer feedback and encourages shoppers to share their thoughts through official channels.
Meanwhile, despite the mixed reviews in the candle section, customers continue to express excitement over Kmart's new February Living range. Many have hailed the recent collection as stylish additions to their homes, featuring neutral and earthy tones that appeal to Kmart's loyal following.
You won't find a Post-It Note attached to the buzzworthy compressed sofa, however. Priced at $599, it comes compactly packaged, but once unboxed, it inflates into a luxurious three-seater couch.
While the comments may not be handwritten, they are overwhelmingly positive. One delighted customer shared, "In love! Such a great size and colour," while another playfully asked, "Have I been influenced?" A third chimed in with excitement, writing, "OMG I want one!"
