An autopsy revealed evidence of dingo bites, but the official cause of death was drowning.
Todd and Angela James, Piper's parents, made the long journey from their home in Campbell River, Canada, to Brisbane, Australia. Their arrival marks the beginning of an emotional pilgrimage to K'gari, where they will visit the beach where their daughter's life ended.
"It's incredibly difficult," Mr. James shared with AAP. The couple's grief is palpable, and they declined to speak further with the media.
Later this week, the James family will participate in a traditional smoking ceremony organized by the Butchulla Indigenous people, the traditional owners of the land. This ceremony holds deep cultural significance for the Butchulla community and is a way for them to bring calm to the land, acknowledge Piper's spirit, and offer healing.
"We wanted Piper to leave with beautiful memories, so she could return another day," explained Christine Royan, director of the Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation. "The smoking ceremony is an important part of our culture and responsibilities, and we want to ensure Piper's spirit rests peacefully."
The family's journey continues with a 'beautiful celebration' of Piper's life, scheduled for February 28. In the aftermath of this tragedy, rangers have increased patrols across K'gari, the world's largest sand island, and six dingoes have been destroyed due to aggressive behavior.
In other news, the Australian government's special envoy, Aftab Malik, has condemned a threatening letter sent to the Lakemba Mosque in Sydney. Malik described the letter, which included intimidating threats and hateful messages, as crossing an unacceptable line. The letter depicted a mosque on fire with people inside, accompanied by statements like "human waste preaches here" and "deport Lebanese garbage waste."
"These threats come just before the holy month of Ramadan, a time when Australians of all backgrounds visit mosques and stand in solidarity with peaceful worshippers," Malik stated. "Intimidation and hate-motivated acts must be taken seriously and addressed with firm consequences. Every Australian has the right to worship freely and without fear."
